HOW EMPLOYMENT SCAMS ARE PERPETUATED
People who are looking for work may be targeted by businesses or individuals taking advantage of their situation. They may promise employment results, promote fictitious or outdated job offerings, or otherwise misrepresent their services. In addition, they can charge high advance fees, ranging from several hundred to several thousand dollars, for their services.

TIPS TO AVOID EMPLOYMENT SCAMS
Tips for what to look for in order to avoid an employment scam before you send in any money in response to a job ad or sign a job placement contract can be found at the Better Business Bureau (BBB) website: https://www.bbb.org/us/news/scams

FILING A COMPLAINT
Complaints about fraudulent employment services can be filed through the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) website: https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/#/. Click on “Get Started Now” and select the responses pertaining to job opportunities and scams. Note that the FTC will not be able to resolve your particular issue; rather the agency uses complaints to investigate and bring cases against fraud, scams, and bad business practices.

Connecticut residents can also contact the Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) or file a General Consumer Complaint Form through DCP’s website: https://portal.ct.gov/DCP/Complaint-Center/Consumers—Complaint-Center

The Better Business Bureau will investigate complaints about member agencies only.
